• Kataa Malaria
In 2005, T-MARC developed and launched a successful campaign in Zanzibar called Kataa Malaria (Say No to Malaria). T-MARC worked closely with the Zanzibar Malaria Control Programme (ZMCP) on a number of activities for the campaign, including the free distribution of long lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) to pregnant women and children, community mobilization, and creating awareness on prevention and treatment strategies for malaria. T-MARC also developed supportive educational materials and adapted media materials for the campaign, such as literature, banners, posters, T-shirts, and other promotional materials to generate awareness and educate Zanzibaris on malaria prevention.

Africare supported community mobilization and promotion efforts through a small grants program that contributed significantly to the proper use of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINS) in Zanzibar households. Kataa Malaria had a significant impact on reducing malaria caseloads in Zanzibar. One of the Zanzibar islands reported that in the first nine months of 2006, the number of malaria cases dropped almost 90% compared to the same time last year (as cited by President Bush in his speech at the White House Summit on Malaria in December 2006).

    Data/Results
    • Distributed 210,129 LLINs to risk groups in Zanzibar and distributed 5,000 additional nets in outer-lying islands.
    • Awarded grants to ten NGOs for community mobilization activities, with the assistance of Africare.
    • Developed TV and radio spots supporting net installation.
    • Sensitized religious leaders throughout Zanzibar on the importance of mobilizing the community against malaria.
National Malaria Control ProgramT-MARC also collaborated with the National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) on the mainland to prepare a grant request to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria (GFATM) to develop the private sector market for Artemisinin Combination Therapy (ACT).
